From a young age Cruz-Diez cultivated his artistic vein. His passion for art and his fascination for colour came from his father's small soda bottle factory. After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Caracas, he began working as an illustrator and graphic designer. In the 70s he left Venezuela and settled in Paris, a city where he continues to reside and continues to create. Carlos Cruz-Diez's plastic discourse gravitates around the chromatic phenomenon conceived as an autonomous reality that evolves in space and time, without the help of form or support, in a continuous present. His research has contributed to art a new form of knowledge about the phenomenon of color, considerably expanding its perceptual universe. He was president of the Carlos Cruz-Diez Stamp and Design Museum Foundation in Caracas and was awarded the Order of Andrés Bello (OAB). In 2005 his family created the Cruz-Diez Foundation dedicated to the conservation, development, dissemination and research of his artistic and conceptual legacy.
